Year 1 have now begun phonics groups and are enjoying learning new sounds (also named phonemes) every day. Children are placed in groups to provide the best support and phonics to allow them to achieve passing thier phonics screening in June 2020.

These groups will change throughout the year, as the phonics groups are streamlined and children move into different groups to allow for best development.

Take a look at some of the fun sessions taking place throughout September and October 2019!

Here is a brief overview of the plan of phonics sessions run every morning for 45 minutes:

9:05-9:15: Speedy sound cards (phase 3 and 5)

9:15-9:30: Look at slides of our chosen sound (phoneme) for the day

9:30-9:40: Fill out the worksheet of the word of the day then practice our cursive handwriting of that sound (phoneme)

9:40-9:50: group read of a phonics leveled book which children take home to practice

In the next half term there will be workshops based on our phonics schemes running in school.

This is open to all parents and families to showcase the children’s skills in phonics. We will be demonstrating how we teach phonics everyday in school and how this is providing a fun environment to learn new sounds!

There will also be time to answer any questions you may have around the phonics screening which takes place in June 2020 for year 1 children.

We are now working towards our phase 5 sounds and how these are hidden in words. We have been learning how to spot these in bigger words and how to read the tricky words too!

We have included games and bingo based around the phase 3 and 5 sounds including how these sound in words.

This month in active phonics we have been working on those phase 3 sounds (phonemes) and making sure we spot the trigraphs and digraphs in the words!

We have been doing lots of good learning to practice our spellings and learn the words we need to in our year group.
